Both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Canadian Coast Guard were alerted about an engine fire on the MV Cuyahoga as it travelled on Lake Erie between Pelee Island and Point Pelee.

The ship left an Ohio port around 7:25 p.m. Tuesday and was scheduled for a stop at Kingsville’s port at 11 p.m.

A helicopter flew out of the Coast Guard Air Station in Detroit to observe the situation. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and a U.S. tow boat network also responded.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Great Lakes sector, the fire was contained and there were no injuries.

Marine traffic monitors describe the MV Cuyahoga as a Canadian bulk carrier measuring more than 184 metres (605 feet) in length.

It was built in 1943 and its home port is in Nanticoke, Ontario.

As of 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, the ship remained stopped on Lake Erie about 15 kilometres north of Pelee Island and 15 kilometres west of Point Pelee.

However, it continued to be listed as an active vessel.
